In late December 2015, the Southeast was hit with massive storms that caused dangerous flooding and destruction. A series of blizzards, tornadoes, and flash floods caused the death of over 25 people and countless other injuries and misplaced persons. Upon hearing this news, Paralyzed Veterans coordinated efforts with its Gulf Coast affiliates to proactively provide monies for paralyzed veterans and their families who were affected by the inclement weather. The organization stresses that when individuals who are disabled are displaced by catastrophes like flooding or fire, those individuals often have a difficult time finding an alternative place to stay.
The organization set up a financial assistance program called the Paralyzed Veterans of America’s Disaster Relief Fund, whereby affected veterans and their families can apply for grants of $1,500. The grant can be used toward replacing food and clothing and making housing repairs.
